DEEP-DRAWING SIMULATION WITH DEFORM SOFTWARE

MORI 2A & ECOTRE

MORI 2A in collaboration with ECOTRE VALENTE, metallurgical and process specialists, exclusive distributor in Italy of the DEFORM software dedicated to the simulation of deep drawing, blanking, bending, annealing and heat treatment, has carried out an in-depth analysis of the phenomena that take place during the deep drawing process.

Using the DEFORM software, the thermal, tensional and deformation phenomena related to the deep drawing of a stainless steel sink (AISI 304 – 1.4301) were analysed.

  • The following parameters were taken into account
  • Chemical composition of the raw material
  • Anisotropy of the deep-drawing sheet due to the rolling direction
  • Work hardening index
  • Limit diagram of formability (FLD)
  •  Heat treatment
  • Type of lubricant
  • Process parameters of the drawing cycle
  • Blank, shape and thickness of the starting plate
  • Sheet metal pre-forming
  • Sliding or stretching deep drawing

Thanks to the deep-drawing tests carried out in DEFORM, Mori 2A can produce its sinks by computer and know their performance and quality: tons required, shape, defects, wrinkles, cracks and springback. It is possible to meet high quality requirements, achieve low development times and minimise costs by using sampling in the virtual department. DEFORM integrates with GOM’s dimensional control technology.

Simulation technology is used to calculate and optimise the design and shape of a product, together with the moulds and forming process required for production.

Knowing the properties of the material enables DEFORM simulations to be obtained with predictive reliabilit

y of more than 90%, product variants to be reliably compared and the sheet metal forming process to be optimised.

Mori 2A in cooperation with industrial measurement technology specialist GOM has used the ARGUS analysis system to optimize the sheet metal forming process.

The results of the ARGUS system provide information on:

  • Forming limit diagram (FLD)
  • 3D coordinates of the component surface
  • Shape change (major and minor deformation)
  • Thickness reduction
  • Sheet metal work hardening
