SAFETY ASSESSMENT OF THE SUBSTANCE BIS(2-ETHYLHEXYL) CYCLOHEXANE-1,4DICARBOXYLATE, FOR USE IN FOOD CONTACT MATERIALS

Based on the reported in vitro and in vivo genotoxicity studies, the Panel concluded that the substance does not raise a concern for genotoxicity

The EFSA Panel on Food Contact Materials assessed the safety of the additive bis(2-ethylhexyl)cyclohexane-1,4-dicarboxylate (DEHCH). Based on the reported in vitro and in vivo genotoxicity studies, the Panel concluded that the substance does not raise a concern for genotoxicity. No adverse effects were observed up to the highest tested dose of 1,000 mg/kg body weight (bw) per day in repeated dose toxicity studies. Nevertheless, these data do not remove the uncertainty on the potential for accumulation in humans. Therefore, the CEP Panel concluded that bis(2-ethylhexyl)cyclohexane-1,4-dicarboxylate does not represent a safety concern for the consumer. What declared is valid for poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) in contact with foods for which simulants A (10% ethanol) and B (3% acetic acid) are assigned, for long-term storage at room temperature or below. The migration of the substance should not exceed 0.050 mg/kg food.

In December 2019, Turkey published two Notifications to align its food contact plastics with those from Regulation (EU) 10/2011 in the European Union. The two Notifications are: Notification No. 2019/43 under Number 30989 of December 25, 2019 ‘Turkish Food Codex Communication on Food Simulants used in Migration Tests for Plastic Materials and Articles Intended to Come into Contact with Food’ – repeals Notification No. 2013/35 in Number 28710 of July 17, 2013 Notification No. 2019/44 under Number 30989 of December 25, 2019 ‘Turkish Food Codex Communication on Plastic Materials and Articles Intended to Come into Contact with Food’ – repeals Notification 2013/34 in Number 28710 of July 17, 2013
Both of the Notifications entered into force on December 25, 2019 – the date of their publication in the T.C. Resmi Gazete. Their provisions will become effective on December 31, 2020.
