THE UNITED KINGDOM WILL INTRODUCE A TAX ON PLASTIC PACKAGING BY 2022

The UK Government plans to introduce a tax on all plastic packaging containing less than 30% recycled content by April 2022.
The UK government is planning to introduce a new tax on all plastic packaging that does not include at least 30% recycled content. Presenting its budget for autumn 2018, on 29 October, Chancellor Philip Hammond said that the government aims to enforce the tax from April 2022 to give companies time to adjust their behavior and manage the costs they face”.
Plans for the new PPRS system, with the aim of encouraging the design and use of plastic packaging that is easier to recycle, will be announced later this year. According to Hammond, future revenues from packaging tax and packaging producer responsibility reforms will encourage investment in tackling the problem of disposable plastics and waste.

TURKEY: ADOPT A NEW REGULATION ON PLASTICS COMING INTO CONTACT WITH FOOD

Turkey notified the World Trade Organisation (WTO) of a new proposal for a Regulation on plastic materials in contact with food (MCA) on 15 November 2018.
According to the notification to the Turkish Food Codex on plastics and articles coming into contact with food”; should enter into force on 1 February 2019 with a transitional period of two years. It will replace the current Turkish regulation of 2013 on plastics in contact with food. Turkey, as a member of the EU Customs Union, is aligning all its chemical legislation with that of the EU Member States.
The deadline for comments on the proposed regulation is 14 January 2019.
