BISPHENOL A

Bisphenol A , commonly abbreviated as BPA, is an organic compound with two phenol groups, it is a fundamental building block in the synthesis of plastics and plastic additives. Definitely one of the main monomers in the production of polycarbonate.

The evidence of the toxicity of Bisphenol A has accumulated over the years, starting from the thirties and more intensely in the last decade. It has been shown that BPA interferes with the hormonal balance and can damage brain development, reproductive organs, both in fetuses and adults, and the immune system.

Starting from 2010, some governments, such as the Canadian and the French one, decided to ban the use of BPA in the manufacture of plastic containers for food or beverages intended for children up to three years .

Following these interventions , the European Commission adopted Directive 2011/8/UE which established the ban of the production of polycarbonate baby bottles containing Bisphenol A starting from 01/03/2011 and the importation and marketing prohibition starting from June of the same year.

The EFSA( European Food Safety Authority ) will have to debate about Bisphenol A, confirming or overturning the results of the toxicological studies carried in 2006 which set a limit of daily exposure in human safety , called the Tolerable Daily Intake ( TDI ) of 0,5 milligrams per Kilogram of bodyweight.

The Tolerable Daily Intake is an estimate of the amount of substance, expressed on a basis of body weight , that can be ingested daily over a lifetime without appreciable risk. The EFSA had also found that the intake of BPA from food and drinks is far lower than the daily intake even for infants and children.

In the meanwhile in January 2015 France will ban the use of containers containing Bisphenol A Intended to come into contact with food. It should be pointed out that there’s no polycarbonate Bisphenol A free     ( as many want us to believe ), but there’s a strong commitment of the polycarbonate producers, to reduce it’s content.

Mori 2A, pending the decision of EFSA, after many tests and obtaining more than satisfactory results, has developed a new line ( simultaneously to the polycarbonate one ) of gastronorm containers in TRITAN : a copolyester BPA free.
